NOSCE TE IPSUM.
Know thyself
Solo Exhibition
The intoxicating gases of the Oracle of Delphi, through which the Pythia oracled in a trance in the temple of Apollo, could just as easily have been present during the genesis and creation of Errol Buwalda's enchanting work.
The text 'know thyself' engraved on the temple of the same name will continue to resonate after seeing this exhibition and leave many in wonder.
The work of this Rotterdam 'grand master', who once started as a tattoo artist in Utrecht and currently lives in Antwerp, gets under the skin. The grand masters of the High Renaissance and the Baroque held a great attraction for Errol, and still do. He also drew much inspiration from the works of Caravaggio and Guido Reni, among others, and marveled at Peter Paul Rubens, Jacob Jordaens, and Anthony van Dyck.
In 2013, he took a masterclass with the Dutch classical master painter Cornelis Le Mair, which gave him a push in the right direction. Errol's works are directly connected to the past, present, and future of the inner man, with all his flaws and virtues. Subsequently, it is the viewer's turn to ask themselves whether there might be a rarity based on one's own judgment.
